{"id":25,"date":"2014-05-16T19:44:09","date_gmt":"2014-05-16T19:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.indexartcenter.org\/?page_id=25"},"modified":"2014-07-12T19:30:54","modified_gmt":"2014-07-12T19:30:54","slug":"dichotomy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.indexartcenter.org\/?page_id=25","title":{"rendered":"Dichotomy &#8211; June 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Index Art Center presents\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"color: #222222;\">Dichotomy\u00a0<\/i><span style=\"color: #222222;\">at the Paterson Art Walk\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aBn\" style=\"color: #222222;\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1280082767\"><span class=\"aQJ\">June 13-15, 2014<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"color: #222222;\">Dichotomy\u00a0<\/i><span style=\"color: #222222;\">is a group exhibition exploring the transformation of environment and space by incorporating both large and small scale works by Jonathan Beer, Jose Camacho, Heather Garland, Joseph O\u2019Neal, and Joe Strasser.\u00a0 The show will provide an opportunity to experience the sea change of each painter from a large public viewing space to an intimate enclosure; all under the curation of Colleen Gutwein.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><b>Jonathan Beer <\/b>is a New York-based artist and writer. Beer was born in New Orleans, Louisiana He received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art.. He was awarded a 3rd Year Post Graduate Fellowship at the New York Academy of Art in 2012.\u00a0 Jon is the co-founder of Art-Rated, and is a contributing writer for The Brooklyn Rail, ArtWrit, and Art Observed.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/jonathanbeer.com\/\">jonathanbeer.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Jose Camacho <\/b>was born in Puerto Rico and was encouraged by his teachers to pursue his art from a young age.\u00a0 Jose studied painting and drawing at the Art League in Old San Juan, and graduated\u00a0 from Montclair State University after studying with Miriam Beerman.\u00a0 Jose has\u00a0 received fellowships from the NJ State Council of the Arts and the Brodsky Center.\u00a0 Jose currently works as the director of the Midland Gallery in Montclair, NJ.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/josecamacho.com\/\">josecamacho.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Heather Garland<\/b>\u00a0 was born in Pontiac MI and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.\u00a0 She received an MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and a BFA from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.\u00a0 Garland is a classically trained oil painter who uses this training selectively.\u00a0 On entering her studio on can see that she is interested in using whatever materials are necessary to achieve psychological effect.\u00a0 Aesthetics and emotion bear equal weight in her work that is grounded in the diaristic and obsessive.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/heatherelizabethgarland.blogspot.com\/\">heatherelizabethgarland.blogspot.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Joseph O\u2019Neal<\/b> Joseph O\u2019Neal claims home as North Carolina and works in Brooklyn, NY and Newark, NJ, Joseph creates a transcendental dialogue through a system driven by the archaic. Symbols, phonetics, and imagery come descendent from a past that, in the words of Motherwell, \u201c\u2026could only have been conceived of at present.\u201d \u00a0 In O&#8217;Neal&#8217;s words; &#8220;The work consists of two variables: the problem and the resolution. Both variables are present in the end result, like the shaking of hands at a peace treaty. The handshake dissolves my relevancy.\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/josephoneal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">josephoneal.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Joe Strasser <\/b>believes his environment has a lot to do with his work. The artist has relocated a great deal moving from the suburbs of New Jersey; to living in a van on the beach in Hawaii; to a campground in Woodstock, NY; to Miami, FL; and now residing in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>According to Strasser; &#8220;It has taken me over 20 years to completely paint what I want. My work is mostly about using found material and placing it in a new context and giving it new life. This creates a certain kind of poetry with the found detritus. I also believe sex and death should always be present in a piece. There\u2019s a Dionysian Apollonian pull of divine inspiration and the latticework of coincidence. \u201c <a href=\"http:\/\/bluetan.com\/\">bluetan.com<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #141823;\">This exhibition is located on the 1st floor at 70 Spruce St in Paterson, NJ.
